Creamistry Opening in Belmont Shore

Posted by on Nov 20, 2014 in Dessert, Reviews | 0 comments

We attended as a guest of Creamistry I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Creamistry hand crafts an amazing scoop of ice cream right in front of you using high quality ingredients. First you start with a base of either an indulgent premium, organic, or non-dairy soy. Then you create your unique recipe from a selection of 50 flavors and over 50 mix-in toppings. Then watch as they mix your recipe with liquid nitrogen (-321 degrees) which freezes the cream mixture upon contact then quickly evaporates leaving you with a delicious scoop of ice cream. The secret to creating the creamiest ice cream is in the rapid freezing of the mixture. Traditionally, ice cream is made in a batch freezer, where it takes about 30-45 minutes to freeze cream into ice cream. Because liquid nitrogen is so...

Posted by on Nov 2, 2014 in Bakery, Dessert, Reviews | 0 comments

We dined as a guest of Casey’s Cupcakes Casey’s Cupcakes is putting a whole new twist on the traditional cupcake with their cupshakes. Now cupcake loves can have their cupcake and drink it too! Guests are invited to select their favorite cupcake flavor and then have it magically transformed into a rich and delicious “cupcake” milkshake. The options are endless with this new sweet treat at our favorite OC cupcake shop. When celebrating my son’s birthday last month, we ended the celebration by ordering “cupshakes” to take with us to enjoy on our way home. My son took the cookies and cream cupcake and had them turn it into a cookies and cream flavored milk shake that was delectably delicious. The cupshake doesn’t taste like a traditional milkshake. It has the sweet flavors of the cupcake along with the...

Posted by on Sep 4, 2014 in Dessert, Featured, Reviews | 0 comments

We dined as a guest of Ruby’s Ruby’s Diner is one of the best places to cool down from the summer sun with a delicious dessert. When we got news that three Ruby’s locations were serving Marianne’s ice cream, we could not wait to plan a visit. Marianne’s ice cream first started in Santa Cruz in 1947. The founder, Tom Becker, named the popular ice cream parlor after his two daughter Mary and Anne. Marianne’s is still located at 1020 Ocean Street in Santa Cruz and is one of the best ice creams to be found in California. Guests can enjoy Marianne’s ice cream at the three select Ruby’s Diner locations (Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach). Guests can select from a variety of flavors and specialty ice cream treats. After a fun day playing at the beach...

Not Your Traditional Snow Cones at Sno 2 Go

Posted by on Aug 30, 2014 in Dessert, Featured, Reviews | 0 comments

I drive by Sno 2 Go twice a day when driving my kids to school. I have always been curious about the snow cone restaurant but have never had the time to stop for a sweet treat until yesterday. After volunteering for hours in the hot sun on the school playground, I was ready for a quick cool down, so we stopped for a treat at Sno 2 Go. I was expecting to get a traditional plastic cup filled with shaved ice and a rainbow of food coloring on top. What we ended up getting was one of the most delicious desserts we have ever had. We walked up to the order window (they also have a drive thru) and a sweet girl in the window helped the kids to order a dessert that she thought they would...

Creating Your Own Decadent Treat at Creamistry

Posted by on Aug 25, 2014 in Dessert, Reviews | 0 comments

We attended as a guest of Creamistry If you’ve ever watched Chopped or Iron Chef on The Food Network chances are you’ve seen a cool contraption that many of the competitor chefs use to make ice cream with liquid nitrogen in mere minutes. I’ve sometimes thought it would be fun to own one of these machines. Just imagine being able to make any kind of ice cream you want almost instantly. But back to reality… my kitchen is too small, not to mention my budget. As it turns out however, some of the newest ice cream shops are picking up on this trend and are using liquid nitrogen ice cream machines to create an entire experience whipping up almost any imaginable flavor combination incorporating candy, cake, cereals, cookies and other treats right before your very eyes. Recently, I was...

Healthy Summer Treat at Active Culture in Laguna Beach

Posted by on Jun 7, 2014 in Dessert, Featured, Reviews | 0 comments

After a warm summer afternoon at the beach, we love to cool down with some frozen yogurt at Active Culture. The cafe is located right across the street from Anita Street Beach and has a wide variety of self-serve frozen yogurt flavors, acai bowls, wraps, and bagels. The restaurant is located inside of a beautiful adobe style building with indoor and outdoor seating available. While sitting on the outdoor patio, families can enjoy their frozen yogurt while basking in the cool ocean breezes with a beautiful view of the pacific ocean. After spending a pre-summer day at Anita Street Beach last week, the kids and I walked across the street for some frozen yogurt at Active Culture. Casey’s Cupcakes Debuts New Skinny Cupcake

Posted by on May 5, 2014 in Dessert, Featured, Reviews | 0 comments

With summer around the corner, thoughts of lazy days at the pool and beach are some of the prime moments we look forward to all year. However, one thing that is not top of mind are high-calorie desserts. Well, Casey Reinhardt, owner and master inventor of Casey’s Cupcakes created a new dessert just in time for summer – the Skinny Cupcake. My daughters and I visited The Irvine Spectrum Center’s Casey’s Cupcakes location and ordered a few cupcakes to sample. We sat on the patio under the pink awning with the afternoon sun shining. Surprisingly, the Skinny Cupcake did not have that “diet” after-taste like many other low-calorie foods. The fluffy angel food cake is topped with non-dairy, sugar free whipped cream, a fresh strawberry and sparkling glitter. As I enjoyed each bite, it was hard to believe...

A New Farrell’s has come to Town

Posted by on Mar 10, 2014 in Dessert, Featured, Reviews | 0 comments

“Old Time Memories for a New Generation” My family and I were invited to attend a pre-opening at the new Farrell’s in Buena Park, near Knott’s Berry Farm. We open the doors as if going through a time machine and find ourselves in the midst of the 1890s. We see fellows and gals dressed in pin stripe and cane hats. We’re engulfed with sound: clapping, singing, and even an ambulance siren. Fun is in the air! The kids immediately spot the old-fashioned candy store. Add some spectacular ice cream concoctions and you have Farrell’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor! I have such fond childhood memories of Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor. It was THE place to celebrate when I was a kid. They were known for giving children a free ice cream sundae on their birthday. But the coup...

What happens when you mix liquid nitrogen and delicious natural ingredients? You get the most incredible ice cream in Orange County. Creamistry is not only creating high-quality fresh ice cream, but also creating a unique experience for families to enjoy. After having lunch at Veggie Grill with a girlfriend, we wanted to see what all the hype around this unique OC ice cream shop was, so we headed into Creamistry for an after lunch treat. When we first walked into the front door, we both went “whoa!” when we spotted the liquid nitrogen steaming behind the counter. After we stood in awe for about five minutes, we finally decided to see what we wanted to order. Like the typical “always distracted me” I was still captivated by the cool white smoke while my friend walked me through the...

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt

Posted by on Feb 11, 2014 in Dessert, Featured, Reviews | 0 comments

We visited as a guest of Menchie’s My family loves frozen yogurt. It doesn’t matter if it is 50 degrees or 100 degrees, we will drive anywhere for frozen yogurt. I recently found out about Menchie’s and decided to see if there were any locations close by. Score! There was a location 15 miles from us and we were out the door in 5 minutes flat (like I said we love frozen yogurt). As you open the door of the brightly lit shop, the aroma of freshly made waffle bowls carries you away to the wall of yogurt. You are now in front of dozens of options for flavors to sample and then choose. I went with my staple choice of chocolate peanut butter cup and let me tell you Menchie’s was the creamiest by far. Once I was...

Crispa Crepes Brings Healthy Fast Casual Family Dining to Irvine

Posted by on Oct 10, 2013 in American, Dessert, Featured, Reviews | 0 comments

Families are always looking for a healthy fast casual dining solution, and Crispa Crepes is just the answer. Last week, we went to Crispa Crepes, and brought along our daughter to see how “kid-friendly” crepes are. After tasting just a few of the unique creations being served at Crispa Crepes, it was kid approved! I have always only had crepes as a breakfast dish until now. I never thought that a crepe could be so delicious when filled with fresh, flavorful ingredients. After trying almost all of the savory crepes, the two that were the most kid-friendly were the French and the Italian. The French was simple, and perfect for the picky eater. It comes filled with ham, swiss cheese and thyme. The Italian is loaded with grilled chicken, pesto, tomato sauce, swiss cheese, red onion and basil....

Balboa Island Balboa Bars

We are in for another warm weekend, and it is the perfect time to head down to Balboa Island to get a freshly made Balboa Bar. I have been getting frozen bananas and Balboa Bars from Dad’s on Balboa Island since I was just a young kid. It brings back some of my favorite childhood memories enjoying the refreshing dessert with my children. Balboa Bars can be found anywhere on Balboa Island, but Dad’s is the best. Be prepared for there to be a long line on a warm weekend afternoon as families line-up for this favorite dessert. When you get up to the window to order your dessert, you’ll be asked if you want a frozen banana or a balboa bar. Then comes the fun part, as you will get to pick out your own toppings for...
