We dined as a guest of Tortilla Republic

Lunch with a girlfriend and an ocean view makes for a perfect day, especially when you’re treated to amazing menu items from Tortilla Republic. This new Laguna Beach restaurant features a modern Mexican Cuisine. Tortilla republic serves up Mexican classics but made with fresh, flavorful and unique ingredients and gluten free, local first, organic when available, all natural chicken and meats.

When dining with a friend, I like to enjoy good conversation over a drink, be it a cocktail or refreshing iced tea, today we opted for a cocktail. A warm afternoon and a cool drink do hand-in-hand, we sipped margaritas and enjoyed the guacamole and salsa tasting, like a salsa flight. The guacamole is mixed to perfection with Avocado, serrano pepper, tomatoes, onions, cilantro and lime to make the flavors pop! Three salsas come on the platter, Salsa de mesa, salsa de tomatillo fresca, salsa de papaya habanero, served with tortilla chips, crisp and a hint of salt, perfecto! Personally, my favorite was the Habanero-papaya salsa, the sweetness of the papaya cut the extreme spice of the habanero making this not only eatable, but delicious!

The appetizer menu is expansive offering a multitude of fresh selections. Want something light and unique? Order the Tacos De Jicama. The tortilla is actually created with from thinly sliced jicama “tortillas” then filled with shrimp, chipotle mayo, cilantro, red onions, avocado and roasted corn salsa. Another “must have” appetizer item are the Chicken Flautas, or properly pronounced “Flautas De Pollo”. The flour tortilla is light, yet crispy stuffed Mary’s free range chicken, monterey jack cheese and beautifully presented with crema and guacamole.

Just want a salad? Tortilla Republic serves four varieties, my personal favorite is the Shrimp Zarandeado Salad. The salad is a colorful and delightful mixture of sautéed shrimp zarandeado style, mixed greens, romaine, melon, jicama, tomato, roasted almonds with queso fresco sprinkle and kiwi vinaigrette drizzle, ole!

Baja Rock Shrimp tacos, or as I like to call them “skinny tacos” are just one of the five different varieties. Lettuce leaves filled with Tequila battered shrimp, avocado, tequila passion fruit cabbage slaw, mango salsa, chipotle aioli. Another coastal-inspired taco is the Seared Albacore Tuna, Tequila passion fruit cabbage slaw, pico de gallo, avocado, salsa de mesa, with a cilantro crema.

Deciding on just one enchilada will be difficult; there are four types of chicken enchiladas, we tried the Suizas and the Mole enchiladas. The Suizas is put together with free range chicken, creamy tomatillo sauce and melted chihuahua cheese. I always think good mole is a treat because it’s a labor of love. If you enjoy a good mole, order the Mole Chicken Enchiladas. This enchilada is stuffed with free range chicken, tinga sauce, mole de poblano, crema, queso fresco and sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds. Holy Mole!

Dessert? Yes, please! Chocolate cake served with a scoop of ice cream was rich and smooth was a table-pleaser. Next time I dine, I’ll order the churros that is served with a chocolate and a cajeta caramel dipping sauce, a smaller portioned version of this dessert is offered on the Kids Menu.

Dining with the kids? No problem! There is an ocean view from every set in the restaurant, even the kitchen! Tortilla Republic has a nice Kids Menu featuring cheese quesadillas, black bean & cheese burritos, sweet potato fries, hamburgers and chicken sandwiches. Kids dessert menu offers a daily selection of Gelato and mini churros with a cajeta caramel & chocolate dipping sauce.
