Newport Beach BBQ Competition Returns

Newport Beach BBQ Competition

Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort is pleased to welcome the return of the Newport Beach BBQ Competition for a Winter Q & Expo on January 28, 2017 from 12-6 p.m. Fifty (50) professional BBQ teams from across the region will compete to win their share of $10,000 in cash prizes and for the title of Grand Champion.

The Newport Beach Winter Q is a Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) Sanctioned Event and a California BBQ Association (CBBQA) Team of the Year (ToY) approved contest.

The Winter Q attracts many of the top BBQ teams in California and the region. Nearly half of the teams registered to compete are rated Top 50 in the CBBQA. Big Poppa Smokers, who is currently #1 in California (CBBQA) and #3 in the nation (KCBS), will be defending his title as Grand Champion.

Attendees will have the chance to taste competition BBQ, local beers and wine, and to vote for their top choice in each category to be named People’s Favorite.

Amateur and backyard BBQ Pitmasters will enjoy free classes, samples and demos throughout the event. Learn about different smokers, wood selections, how to identify the best meats, trimming techniques, insights on sauces, rubs and much more. Local Brew Masters will be on-site for a beer tasting of seasonal specials and yearlong favorite brews. The event also offers a full cash bar with beer and wine available by the glass.

Children 5 to 15 years old can show off their grill mastery skills in the Kids Q competition. Each child will receive meat (hamburger or steak), a grill, charcoal and a turn-in container. Prizes will be awarded for First, Second and Third place in each age category (5-10 and 11-15). Kids Q registration is $25 and includes general admission for the child contestant and one supervising adult.

Tickets to Newport Beach BBQ Competition are $10 and free for children up to 12 years of age. Food tickets to sample the participating teams’ competition level BBQ are available for $1 per tasting ticket while supplies last.

A limited number of special advanced purchase options are available online including ordering a full rack of ribs, cooked by local favorites Twisted Brisket and Smokin’ Harts, vacuum sealed and ready to take home.

The Newport Beach BBQ Competition was launched in 2015 by Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club members to help raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics and other Orange County charities. This event continues with that tradition and benefits:

Special Olympics – Special Olympic athletes and their families are treated to Special Olympics Family Appreciation Day, which includes complimentary admission and lunch prepared by top BBQ teams in the region.

Homeless Veterans – The Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club will be collecting canned goods for their “Meals-in-a-Box” program which benefits the 3,500 Homeless Veterans in Orange County.

Free Dental and Vision Clinics – Food and beverage sales at the event help fund Free Dental and Vision clinics through the club’s “Doc-in-a-Box” program, in partnership with AYUDA International, which provides over $1 Million in free dental and vision services in Orange County and around the globe.

End Polio Now – The Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club will be hosting a Bike/Jog for Humanity Program where Rotarians will bike or jog to the event to raise money for Polio vaccinations around the world and other local and global Rotary projects.
