Dining Guide for Families in Orange County

Spring is in the air at Z’Tejas

April showers bring Spring flowers and delicious new cuisine at Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill. Spring is the best time to discover the flavors of sensational cuisine in relaxing outdoor dining venues. Z’Tejas has just introduced a new menu with all the flavors of the season for families to enjoy in their beautiful al fresco heated patio.

With the weather being perfect for an outdoor dining experience, I brought the kids with me to try the new menu items at Z’Tejas. What we found was cuisine with the spice that we love from Z’Tejas along with some unique flavors we would have never expected to find.

With berries beginning to bloom, I began my meal with their berry-licious Spring cocktails. I started with the Chambord Rocks Margarita that came with a Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur twist, that was a light and refreshing way to begin our dining experience.

Our favorite part about dining at Z’Tejas is their warm corn bread and butter. It always keeps the kids happy while waiting for their dinner.

Our kids top pick on their new menu was their fish tacos. They come with crispy fish served in corn tortillas with Southwestern slaw, and mango salsa with black beans and rice. The flavor of the dish is perfect for young kids, and we would recommend a little tabasco or hot sauce for mom or dad. The best part about this dish is that it does not have the traditional “fishy flavor” so your kids won’t even know they are eating fish (shhh!)

My husbands favorite menu item was the Sweet Chile Pork Tenderloin. It comes with pan-seared pork tenderloin over sauteed spinach and arugula. The dish is finished with sweet chile butter sauce with orange and jalapeno salad. The dish is clearly on the sweeter side, and I recommend mixing all the ingredients together to blend the flavors before having your first bite. This is not a dish you want to eat in sections, to appreciate all the flavors.

While I have never been a fan of Paella before, their seafood paella caught me off guard. It comes with a skillet of scallops, shrimp, mussels, and Andouille sausage tossed with saffron and green pea rice. While most paella’s have the ingredients well-blended after simmering on the stove all day, this paella is fresh, and not soggy like the traditional dish. There was no skimping on the amount of fish in this dish, and it easily could feed two adults. Even if you don’t have a love for seafood, I guarantee that you’ll love this dish.

For those with picky eaters, I would recommend the Southern Chicken Thighs. The dish comes with crispy chicken served with Southern-style succotash, roasted garlic mashed potatoes and finished with a mango chutney (ask them to hold for extra picky eaters). The dish does not pack a lot of kick and comes loaded with lots of vegetables to give your kids a well balanced meal.

Finally, we finished our meal with their new Mango Upside Down Cake. It came with warm mango cake finished with Myers Rum butter with a refreshing mango sorbet. The dish was such a hit with our kids that I barely got a bite. Since the kids devoured our dessert, my husband and I, shared the Berried Treasure cocktail. It was the perfect Spring dessert cocktail with Herradura Silver, Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur, blackberries, fresh lime juice and Herradura Agave Nectar.
