Temakira to open at University Center this fall

Posted by on Nov 6, 2015 in Asian, Dining News, Sushi | 0 comments

Temakira, the popular sushi-inspired hand roll shop, will open a new location at University Center this fall. Temakira is a restaurant inspired by Brazilian creativity and Japanese tradition. “Temaki,” meaning hand roll and “kira,” meaning together, is an innovative way to introduce a new form of sushi in a contemporary setting. The temakis are made-to-order, crafted by wrapping a piece of nori or seaweed, in a cone shape that holds a selection of rice, raw fish, veggies and sauces within. The roll is large enough to hold by hand, yet easy and fun to eat. Signature hand rolls include the Calientail, combining yellowtail, avocado and cucumber with extra spicy sauce or the Viva, wrapping up shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, cucumber and viva sauce with white rice and crisp nori. Customize your rolls with the options of soy paper,...

Best Sushi Take-Out Sushi in OC: Shinkou Sushi & Poke

Posted by on Nov 3, 2015 in Asian, Featured, Reviews, Sushi | 0 comments

We dined as a guest of the venue I LOVE sushi. But that wasn’t always the case. For a long time, I could not stand sushi. I would avoid eating it at all costs. What I didn’t realize was that I just hadn’t experienced eating decent sushi yet. As my husband continued to try and persuade me to try sushi at different places, I finally began to cave in and found that sushi can be delicious when it is prepared properly and when made with high-quality ingredients. Slowly, I have begun to find my favorite places to eat sushi, and recently discovered the best place in Orange County for take-out sushi Shinkou Sushi & Poke. Let’s be real. As parents to three children, we are always on-the-go. We don’t always have time to cook dinner or eat at a...

Customize Your Bowl At Fins Poke Fusion

Posted by on Sep 3, 2015 in Reviews, Sushi | 0 comments

We dined as a guest of Fins Poke Fusion I still remember the first poke bowl I ever tried 11 years ago. I had recently moved to California from the East Coast and though I’d eaten sushi pretty much every week since the mid 80’s yet I had never even heard of poke bowls. More recently, this food trend transplanted from Hawaii has been gaining in popularity here in Orange County. With chopped fish, rice, a little onion, soy, sesame oil, and a variety of other ingredient… it’s a trend that makes sense. And it’s a trend that Fins Poke Fusion’s Peter Cho is tapping into with the remodel and rethink of his popular former sushi restaurant, The Sushi Zone. Fins Poke Fusion, located off of Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo is now offering build your own poke bowls....

Sushi Roku Brings Authentic Japanese Cuisine to Fashion Island

Posted by on May 29, 2015 in Asian, Featured, Reviews, Sushi | 0 comments

We dined as a guest of Sushi Roku Fashion Island is quickly becoming the hot spot for dining in Orange County especially with the newest addition, Sushi Roku opening on June 1st. Last night, we made our way over to Fashion Island for a sampling of their menu and left excited about coming back for more. After spending a year abroad in Japan as a teenager, I always find myself comparing sushi and seafood to the authentic cuisine I enjoyed while living in Japan. There are few places that I have found that can make sushi comparable to that of which I enjoyed while traveling abroad, and Sushi Roku is one of them. Although I only had a couple of small bites of their sushi, it was enough to have me convinced that this new restaurant is one of the...

RA Sushi’s Seasonal Menu for Spring

Posted by on May 13, 2015 in Sushi | 0 comments

We dined as a guest of the Restaurant I love everything about the art of sushi.  From the colorful meats, to the precision of the cuts, its presentation, it’s just a beautiful and best of all I get to eat it.   My most recent sushi adventure was at RA Sushi Tustin located at The District at Tustin Legacy. As I entered the restaurant, my eyes scanned the beautifully decorated room filled with red lanterns. Following our hostess to our table I eye the tables before me seeing what option my palette had in store.  Perusing the menu I notice a seasonal menu which intrigued me.  My husband and I decide to try out their spring menu along with their spring menu cocktails.  Let me cut to the chase and tell you that we made a great decision.  I chose...

Kai Sushi at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua

Posted by on Apr 13, 2015 in Reviews, Sushi, Travel | 0 comments

We stayed as a guest of the Ritz-Carlton Before leaving The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, my husband I could not help resist trying a dish from Kai Sushi. We planned to eat light when taking the kids to a local Luau so that we would have enough room to savor some late night sushi at Kai. We found a semi-private table with an oversized couch on the outdoor patio of the resort. Our children cuddled up with us on the couch while my husband and I sipped on a glass of wine and listened to the live music playing in the lobby. It was not long before our children spotted some friends they had made earlier in the pool and ran off to play a game of hide and seek on the grassy area below the outdoor patio. As we looked...

RA Sushi Launches Winter Specials and Drinks

Posted by on Feb 8, 2015 in Dining News, Reviews, Sushi | 0 comments

We dined as a guest of RA Sushi I always look forward to sushi so when I was invited to a seasonal winter menu tasting at RA Sushi Bar and Restaurant in Tustin I was psyched. I love trying new sushi places and while the name rang a bell, I couldn’t recall having been there. That feeling of déjà vu hit me when I walked into the restaurant. Filled with red globes suspended from the ceiling the room glows with a warmth that was so familiar yet I couldn’t put my finger on why. After talking with staff I learned that RA was Scottsdale based. That was it… now I remembered. I had been to RA about 7 or 8 years ago while on a girl’s spa weekend with my Chicago friend Katie. We had a fantastic sushi dinner...

Japan Meets Korea with Dami Sushi & Izakaya

Posted by on May 7, 2014 in Reviews, Sushi | 0 comments

My love for sushi began 28 years ago when I was living in Chicago and my friend Jami took me to my first sushi bar. I loved everything about that experience. The process of mixing a little wasabi in my soy sauce with chopsticks; the cool, fresh taste of the ocean with each bite; the different texture of each fish, some firmer, some velvety and soft, some chewy; the way the tobiko popped in my mouth; the way the wasabi hit me right between the eyes; the pungent pickled ginger between bites; the ritual of it all. I was hooked! Hooked to the point of committing all of the Japanese names for each fish to memory almost immediately. Since that day, I have rarely gone a week without sushi. So when I was invited to attend the Grand...

Celebrate Spring With Seasonal Cocktails at Rok Sushi Kitchen

Posted by on Mar 28, 2014 in Reviews, Sushi | 0 comments

Hello Spring! You are here and Rok Sushi Kitchen in Hermosa Beach is celebrating with their launch of several new seasonal cocktails. I love sushi and am fascinated by the creativity that is expressed in many of today’s craft cocktails so I jumped on the opportunity to attend this unveiling. Upon arriving at Rok, each of us who were attending were ushered upstairs where Assistant GM, Sean Woodward and GM, Toshi Yuhara, greeted us with a champagne flute filled with a Bubbly Cali, the first of four of their new creations. This crisp, slightly sweet, effervescent cocktail has equal parts No. 209 Gin and Medlock Ames Verjus, a white juice made from un-ripened Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. It’s mixed with a house-made basil infused simple syrup, sparkling wine, and garnished with a cucumber slice. The No. 209 Gin imparts a...
