Dining Guide for Families in Orange County

Z’Tejas Summer Menu

We dined as a guest of Z’Tejas

Now that Summer is here, so are some incredible new shows at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and their outdoor summer movie series. Before going to see a show or outdoor movie at the Segerstrom Center this year, treat your family to dinner at Z’Tejas for their all-new summer menu.

There are lots of surprises on the new summer menu including a deliciously creamy pasta dish (Habanero Chicken Pasta). Not something that I would expect to see on a summer menu, but I quickly found that I could not have just one bite. For guests seeking a little comfort food during the warm summer month, this dish paired with their warm corn bread is my go-to choice off their new menu. What is in this delicious dish? Chicken, angel hair pasta, baby spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and capers that are sauteed in a light habanero-citrus wine sauce..oh my!

For the first time when dining at Z’Tejas, I had their chips and salsa. Your family will get a large bowl of chips, and a trio of salsas. I like a good spicy salsa, but two of these salsa were a little too spicy for me, and one was just right. If you have kids that can’t tolerate spice, I would recommend ordering this with just the mild salsa, or going with another appetizer.

For parents who are looking for a little cocktail during their dinner at Z’Tejas, there are two new cocktails on the summer menu. There is the Skinny Garden Margarita that is light and refreshing – perfect for a warm summer evening to sip on while relaxing on their outdoor heated patio.

Then there was my favorite cocktail, the Skinny Adult Agua Fresca. This cocktail packs a little heat from the serrano, so if you don’t like a little kick in your cocktail go with the Garden Margarita. The cocktail comes with 1800 Silver tequila, strawberry, watermelon, serrano, lime and agave.

Have kids who are picky about eating fish? They will not know they are eating fish with their crab cakes appetizer. The dish comes with three seared lump crab cakes that were not mushy or fishy – just right for kids. Z’Tejas again surprised me with this dish that I would not expect to see on their menu, and yet cooked to perfection during our dining experience. When dining during lunch, your family can order the crab cakes in a salad with mixed greens, grape tomatoes, roasted corn, and pepitas tossed with a jalapeño basil dressing topped with crispy tortilla strips (pictured).

When looking for the perfect to-go dish to take with your family to the Segerstrom outdoor summer movie nights, my top pick would be a chicken salad sandwich. It comes with smoked chicken, gala apples, grapes and bleu cheese tossed in a light dressing. I opted to have my sandwich without the red onions, and enjoyed it with a piece of lettuce and tomato inside of a toasted brioche bun. For younger kids, I would recommend ordering it without the bun toasted. It is also big enough for two kids to share, and if you get it with a side salad vs. the steak fries or sweet potato fries, the salad will give the kids the added nutrition they need to make it perfectly balanced meal.

Finally, there is the Blackened Tilapia that is served with summer vegetables and topped with grilled pineapple slaw. The dish certainly packs a lot of kick, so if you are a guest who likes fish with a kick – then this is a dish for you.

End your dining experience with your family sharing a piece of their strawberry icebox cake. The sweet treat comes with extra-sweet strawberries layered with lady fingers and topped with whipped cream.
