Dining Guide for Families in Orange County

Culture and Dining come to life at Savor Santa Ana

We attended as a guest

Savor Santa Ana is one our new favorite events and we were excited to be invited back after attending in the Fall of 2014. It’s really a treat to be in a downtown city environment in Orange County and witness first hand the cool vibe that takes over during this event.

Welcoming the icy, refreshing beverages placed in our hands we were headed out for our stroll through the city blocks on a lovely summer evening. We began taking in the culture, the old architecture, the various venues and the variety of live outdoor music as we meandered through revitalized district sidewalks of Santa Ana. It’s beautiful to see the city come alive!

So that everyone can become more familiar with Savor Santa Ana, the event hosts about 20 + restaurant venues that participate with samplings of their specialties. You’ll find an array of treasures from savory dishes, cold beverages and sweet confections to delight your taste buds. One of our first stops led us to the Gypsy Den and this was hands down one of our favorite samplings of the evening; a roasted beet salad with goat cheese, drizzled with olive oil. Our palette was very pleased and we will go back to enjoy it atop arugala with prosciutto, as it’s an item on their menu. Yum!

We continued on our stroll to take in a mariachi band playing outside; allowing for a few impromptu spins around the courtyard. If you’re open to it; a little fun can happen anywhere. This of course, brought on the need to quench our thirst and so we came upon The Good Beer Co. Now, this is a very cool concept as the location utilizes the space in two ways; during the day upstairs as a real estate office and by night a brewery downstairs. Love this idea! We found ourselves making some new friends here and enjoying a lively conversation filled with laughter over craft beers.

Time to hop on the trolley, we have some more food to enjoy! This is a new addition to the event so when you are tired or perhaps just not up for the stroll of the night, board the trolley and let it take you through town. Map in hand, you can navigate the stops to your favorite restaurants. Besides, who doesn’t like a trolley ride.

Here are just a couple other great places to try; for a sweet tooth, Chunk N Chip where you can get a homemade ice cream sandwich. Wursthaus, for drunken fries with sausage; our favorite was the spicy sausage and Wursthaus has a seating area tucked away down a hallway; well away from where you order. The eateries who participate do change and/or the featured samplings; so make sure you pick up your map when purchasing your tickets.

Whether it’s during the summer or another time of year, take the time to venture out for one of the Savor Santa Ana events, it happens on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Remember to cruise by the Farmer’s Market and pick up your favorite fruits and vegetables from local farms. It’s fun to get out, stroll and experience new places, full of great food, people and culture; perhaps you even discover the next best restaurant to take your family, a date or friends. Enjoy!
