Costa Mesa’s Social Wows With Stunning New Desserts

Posted by on Feb 16, 2016 in American, Dessert, Dining News, Reviews | 2 comments

I keep saying desserts aren’t my thing. And for the most part, they aren’t. I rarely make them and I typically don’t order them. My tastes tend to favor the savory side of the menu. But after being invited to try several of Social’s pastry chef, Ashley Guzman’s creations one recent evening, I am going to have to reconsider this bias. Seriously, Ashley is gifted and has a talent for combining familiar and sometimes less familiar ingredients with delightful and memorable results. Her desserts unlike those on so many menus are ones you most likely would never attempt trying to recreate at home and more than likely won’t find on menus elsewhere. So what was on the dessert menu on this particular evening? We started with Cheat Day, a devils food chocolate cake, with chocolate two ways, hazelnuts...

J’s Ice Cream Parlor in Redding

Posted by on Oct 1, 2015 in Dessert, Travel | 0 comments

After spending the afternoon kayaking around the Whiskeytown Lake, we were desperate for a refreshing treat. With it being our first time in Redding, we turned to Yelp to help guide us to the best ice cream shop in town, and that was J’s Ice Cream Parlor. When we first arrived at the ice cream shop, it was located in the middle of a strip mall next to a laundromat. There were a lot of people hanging out in front of the restaurant waiting for their laundry and licking their ice cream cones. We walked into the small restaurant and was immediately greeted by a very friendly employee. She allowed our kids to sample the different ice cream before making their final delicious decision. Excited to find out what all the hype is around Gunther’s Ice Cream, the...

Just like other locations, the restaurant was squeaky clean, adorned in white, and the counters were covered with magical white clouds. If you haven’t been to a Creamistry location yet, ordering is as easy as 1-2-3. 1. First you select a base...

We dined as a guest of The Dirty Cookie Milk and Cookies lovers are rejoicing with the recent opening of The Dirty Cookie in Orange County. We recently made our way over to the hottest new dessert destination to see what all the hype was about, and it was love at first sip. The one challenge when having milk and cookies with my kids is finding a cup wide enough to dip the cookie into the milk. The masterminds behind The Dirty Cookie solved the problem with their brilliant invention. When we first arrived at the small restaurant, we were greeted by the employees that were just as sweet as the sugar made to make their cookies. They helped guide us through the process by first picking out our favorite type of cookie. Now, this isn’t a regular cookie,...

Now, your family can experience the sweet treat that Bart and Lisa love at Universal Studios Hollywood. The ice cream cones are unique by offering guests to add their own “flavor swirl.” First guests pick their favorite soft serve ice cream flavor and then add their favorite flavor swirl. The Sweet World of Tamarind’s Pastry Chef Mark Medina

Posted by on Apr 20, 2015 in Dessert, Featured, Reviews | 0 comments

We dined as a guest of Tamarind I rarely eat dessert. Though I enjoy the idea of dessert, usually by the time I’ve finished dinner I’m too full for it. I always enjoy reading the dessert menu however and every once in awhile I’ll see one that makes me think, “Next time I’ll start there.” I never have actually done this though, at least until I was invited to a dessert tasting at Tamarind of London in Crystal Cove. I enlisted my sweets-loving friend, Kathy McGarry to join me because she knows her stuff and is an incredible baker of sweet treats herself! We arrived relatively early, ahead of the dinner crowd and what looked to be an engagement party that had reserved the beautiful outdoor patio area for the evening. We decided to sit in the more casual...

Posted by on Mar 11, 2015 in Dessert, Dining News | 0 comments

Stonefire Grills have announced the debut of a new dessert that has become an instant bestseller just days after its release. But the recipe did not come from the restaurants’ kitchen staff or proprietors. Instead it is based on a generations old recipe from Sandy Moreno of Lake Sherwood, who has never shared it before with the exception of her immediate family. Since Moreno is an extended member of the Harrigan family, owners of Stonefire Grills, she generously offered to share the treasured secret that has been in her family for years. Stonefire Grills have dubbed the new treat “Sandy’s Cookie” in her honor. The oversized dessert contains dark chocolate chips, Heath Bar bits, oatmeal and walnuts is available at all 7 locations for $2.79. Sandy’s Cookie fell in the hands of the Stonefire Grill team after Moreno...

Posted by on Feb 5, 2015 in Dessert, Reviews | 0 comments

After having lunch with the kids at MOD Pizza, we walked over to Nothing Bundt Cakes for dessert. I had been gifted a Nothing Bundt Cake for my birthday last year, and the kids ate it so fast that I never had a chance to have a bite. Then we were given a large bundt cake during the holidays, and again, I didn’t get a bite. I honestly think that I am the only person in Orange County who has not had one of these highly sought after bundt cakes, and I was curious to see what all the hype was about. The moment that we walked into the store, we were overwhelmed by the amazing aroma. The store has a wide variety of cards and gifts to pick-up along with your cakes. The kids had fun looking...

Delicious Donut Discovery at Donut Storr

Posted by on Jan 23, 2015 in Breakfast, Dessert, Reviews | 0 comments

I have driven past the Donut Storr every day when taking my kids to school for the past three years. I’ll be honest that it does not look very inviting from the outside. When I found, myself getting every single green light on the way to taking the kids to school and had an extra twenty minutes to spare I decided to take the kids in to check it out. The donut shop has almost five stars on Yelp (which is not easy to get), and I immediately found out why. Inside the tiny donut shop was a case full of every kind of donut that my kids could ask for. There are about 3-4 small benches, and all were full of families having donuts together. We patiently waited for somewhere to sit and have our donuts together....

The Waffle Affair Opens in Newport Beach

Posted by on Jan 3, 2015 in Breakfast, Coffee, Dessert, Dining News, Reviews | 0 comments

We attended as a guest of The Waffle Affair I’ve always been more of a waffle person than a pancake person. As a kid the only breakfast I really liked was waffles, especially with strawberries and whipped cream. I did not like pancakes and to this day am not a fan. I did not like eggs, though I love them now. But give me a waffle and make it crispy and I was a happy camper. Too bad I’m not a kid growing up in modern times when waffles seem to be all the rage in food. I would have loved to eat myself into oblivion at Newport Beach newcomer, The Waffle Affair without worrying about the consequences. And if you too are a waffle lover and fortunate enough to be in or around Newport Beach you can satisfy...
