Dining Guide for Families in Orange County

Family Staycation Dining at SHOR American Seafood Grill

The Newport Beach Film Festival is right around the corner starting on April 24th, and the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach is the best place to plan a family staycation during the film festival. While staying at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, your family is not going to want to miss dining at SHOR American Seafood Grill. The restaurant offers a chic family-friendly dining experience for families visiting or staying at the resort.

The restaurant has a large alfresco patio where your family can savor the succulent cuisine while basking in the cool ocean breezes. For families who want a more intimate dining experience, they offer semi-private dining areas in the main dining room sectioned with large drapes. When dining at SHOR American Seafood Grill during our recent staycation at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, we dined in one of their semi-private dining areas. It was perfect for our kids to have a relaxed dining experience, and my husband and I were put at ease knowing that our children were not disturbing any other guests in the main dining room.

After a thrilling afternoon playing at the water slides, the kids came to dinner with big appetites. Their hunger was immediately satisfied with the tray of warm bread rolls and butter delivered to the table. While enjoying the warm bread rolls, our family had a chance to review the menu to find some incredibly healthy dining options for the children.

We started dinner with the fried calamari with roasted jalapeño sauce. The appetizer was the perfect size to share with our family of five. Since the kids meal came with a garden salad, the kids paired the calamari with their small salads.

Their menu is very customizable to meet all of their guests dietary needs. My husband ordered the Bone-in Natural Brandt Beef Rib Eye Steak, and was able to select the seasoning and sauce of his choice. The seasoning options were blackened spice, chili lime rub, Montreal seasoning, cilantro garlic rub, adobo, house spice mix, and old bay seasoning. The sauce options available were the house made steak sauce, thume jus, chive horseradish, citrus butter sauce, fire roasted jalapeño aioli, tropical salsa and carrot ginger sauce. He ordered his steak with the house spice mix paired with the house made steak sauce. The steak was cooked to perfection upon a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes.

I was on the fence between the House Made Lobster Ravioli and the Porcini Dusted Diver Scallops. Since I could not resist trying their seafood offerings, I went with the scallops, and I was not disappointed. The scallops were some of the largest scallops I have ever had the pleasure of eating, and I could not even finish my dish. The scallops were paired with smoked potato puree, bacon and corn. It was the a refreshing dinner to enjoy after a warm Spring afternoon.

The kids followed after their daddy and ordered the kids steak plates. There was not a crumb left behind as they savored every bite of their tender steaks and crunchy vegetables. My husband I took pleasure in watching our children enjoy a healthy meal instead of the traditional fries and chicken nuggets that are offered to them at most restaurants in Orange County.

A staycation is not a staycation without dessert before returning to our room for the night. My husband and I shared the apple pear crips with dulce de leche ice cream while the kids shared the flourless chocolate cake with fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream.
